Owners of pools and spas in Victoria are now required by law to ensure that they have installed a life-saving safety barrier around their pool or spa.
Victorian building regulation was changed to require all swimming pools and spas to be surrounded by effective barriers complying with AS 1926.1 – 2010 Swimming pool safety barriers or AS/NZS 3845.1 – 2005 fence regulations Victoria.
The new law requires owners of pools and spas to register their pool with local councils, engage a professional building practitioner or experience builder to inspect compliance with the standard at least every four years and provide a certificate of compliance.

Any pool or spa that does not have a safety barrier needs to be registered with your local council and you will need to install a permanent fence regulations Victoria.
If you have an in-ground pool or spa, a fence must surround the pool area – even if your fence was compliant when built. You may also need to install locks on any gates in the fence.
For above ground pools, the pool safety barrier must be at least 1.2 metres high and may need to include locks or other devices depending on the fittings of your pool.
Owners of temporary swimming pools (such as inflatable pools, spas or wading pools) are not affected by this building regulation requirement change. These types of pool do not require registration or inspections.
Owners of commercial or public swimming pools are not affected by the new legislation at this stage. However, they may voluntarily comply with the standard if they choose to do so.
